Essay Writing Guide
What separates a memorable essay from a forgettable one.
Write about a specific moment, not a summary
'I've always loved science' loses them immediately. 'The moment my experiment failed at 2am and what I did next' keeps them reading.
Sound like yourself
If you wouldn't say a word in conversation, don't put it in your essay. Admissions readers instantly spot a thesaurus. Authentic beats impressive.
Show growth, not perfection
The best essays are about failure, confusion, or change โ not achievements. Admissions officers want to see how you think and grow.
Start in the action
Never open with 'I was born in...' Drop the reader directly into a scene. First impressions in essays matter as much as in real life.
Answer the 'so what?' question
After every paragraph, ask: what does this tell them about me? If an anecdote doesn't connect to who you are โ cut it.
Customize each supplemental essay
'Why this college?' essays require real research. Name specific professors, programs, or traditions. Generic answers are easy to spot.
๐ Common App Essay Prompts (2025โ26)
- 1.Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it.
- 2.The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a challenge, setback, or failure.
- 3.Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking?
- 4.Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful.
- 5.Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth.
- 6.Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose track of time.
- 7.Share an essay on any topic of your choice.
